Directions to plot: Park at kiosk off Rt. 20 and take trail loop counterclockwise. Sample is on W side of trail on large upland flat.
Dry upland flat. Sample is mostly Quercus alba with some Quercus coccinea, but overall stand (beyond sample) also has Quercus velutina in canopy and scattered decadent Pinus virginiana. This sample has more Kalmia than landscape as a whole. This is the most xeric forest in the area. This area has many blow-downs - probably from a single wind event. Sassafras is showing drought stress. Shrub layers are a mix of heaths and seedlings/saplings of Acer rubrum, Carya alba, and Sassafras albidum. Kalmia latifolia is locally dominant. Oak regeneration seems to be mostly Quercus coccinea and Quercus velutina. Herbs are non-existent save for the "subshrub" Chimaphila maculata and Mitchella repens (outside sample).
